10 GE HVAC PTCR OL 3ARR56 Compressor Controls
The 3ARR56 motor starting device is similar in function to the 3ARR50 basic device, except that the 3ARR56 has provisions for the direct connection of a Run Capacitor to the device with no other wiring connections required. Once the capacitor is plugged onto the terminals on the case, the necessary connections are made. To add security for the mechanical attachment of the capacitor to the device, a post which is part of the cover extends upward so that a special clamping feature of the capacitor slides into place to take any load off of the capacitor terminals. With the PTCR/Overload plugged onto the Fusite pins of the compressor, and the Line connections made, the motor is ready to run. Because of the electrical position of the housing, no external cover is required. Only a wire bale is required to secure the device to the Fusite pins. Locking terminals for the Line connections assure that there is no accidental disconnection of the power.
The PTCR within the housing is connected in series with the start winding of the motor. As the star winding is energized, the resistance of the PTCR pellet is heated and the temperature increases until the Curie Point of the material is reached, at which time the resistance of the pellet increase to a very high value, which essentially chokes off the current to the PTCR and de-energizes the start winding. The PTCR is designed to take the start winding out of the circuit at the proper time for correct starting of the motor. The integral motor overload protector is designed to protect the compressor windings in case of a locked rotor condition or a running overload on the compressor. While the motor is running, only a very small amount of heat is dissipated.
