How to determine the correct wattage for your needs
The first thing is to check any appliances for the amount of amps the motor uses. Then mulitply this by the volts to detemine watts. The formula is (amps) x (volts) = (watts).
Example 1: Your refrigeraor has a 12 amp motor and it is plugged in to a 110 volt outlet. This is using 12 amps x 110 volts = 1320 watts of power.
Example 2: Your clothes dryer has a 12 amp motor and it is plugged in to a 220 volt outlet. This is using 12 amps x 220 volts = 2640 watts of power.
